What is melt value?

Melt value is the intrinsic worth of a precious metal item based solely on its metal content. It is calculated by multiplying the item's pure metal weight by the current spot price. Melt value does not account for numismatic premiums, collectibility, or condition.

How is melt value calculated?

Melt value = (Total weight in troy ounces) x (Purity percentage) x (Current spot price). For example, a 1 oz gold coin that is 91.67% pure (22 karat) at a $2,000 spot price has a melt value of 1 x 0.9167 x $2,000 = $1,833.40.

Should I sell my coins for melt value?

Not necessarily. Many coins carry numismatic premiums above melt value due to rarity, condition, or collector demand. Before selling for melt, research whether your coins have additional value. Common bullion coins typically trade close to melt value plus a small premium.
