What "925" Is Worth and Why Offers Are Lower

Sterling is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper, the alloy that has defined silverware and jewellery since the 13th century. The table converts the LBMA fix into the value of the silver inside a sterling item per gram, per pennyweight, per troy ounce and per kilo, alongside the other standards you will meet: .999 bullion, .958 Britannia, .900 coin silver and the .800 used across much of continental Europe.

That figure is melt value. A refiner has to separate the silver from the copper, and silver's low value per gram means the labour and margin are a larger share of the total than they are for gold, so cash offers for sterling scrap typically run 60–90% of melt. Weight is the biggest lever: a few spoons sell at the bottom of the band, a full canteen at the top.

Weighing Sterling: What Counts and What Does Not

Weigh everything on a gram scale, then remove what is not silver. Knife handles are hollow sterling shells filled with cement around a steel blade and are usually bought at a flat rate per handle, not by weight. Candlesticks and trophies marked "weighted" or "reinforced" have a base filled with pitch and contribute very little silver. Stones, steel springs and glass liners are deducted. Everything left, multiplied by 0.925 and the per-gram price, is the metal value.

Then check whether the pieces are worth more intact. Complete sets in popular patterns from Gorham, Towle, Wallace, Reed & Barton or Tiffany routinely sell above melt to replacement dealers, and signed jewellery has a collector market. Monogrammed, damaged or generic pieces usually go to melt.

Sterling Versus Coin Silver and Bullion

Pre-1965 US dimes, quarters, halves and dollars are .900 coin silver and trade as junk silver at a small premium to melt because their weight and purity are standardised; use the junk silver calculator for those. Bullion bars and coins are .999 and sell closest to spot. Sterling sits below both because it needs refining, which is why buying sterling as an investment rarely makes sense, but selling inherited sterling at a fair price does.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is sterling silver worth per gram today?

At the current LBMA silver price of $61.33 per troy ounce, sterling silver (92.5% pure) contains $1.82 of silver per gram. Refiners and scrap buyers typically pay 60–90% of that; the rest covers refining and margin.

Is 925 the same as sterling silver?

Yes. A 925 stamp means 925 parts per thousand silver, which is the sterling standard. Other marks that mean the same thing include "Sterling", "Ster", and the British lion passant hallmark.

How much is a sterling silver flatware set worth?

Weigh it. A typical sterling teaspoon weighs 20–35 g and a dinner fork 45–75 g, but patterns vary widely, and knives are usually hollow handles filled with cement around a steel blade, so only the handle shell counts. Weigh everything except the knives on a gram scale, multiply by 0.925, and use the per-gram price above.

Does silver plate have any silver value?

Almost none. Silver plate is a microscopically thin layer of silver over base metal; the silver content is too small to recover economically. Marks such as EPNS, "silver plate", A1 or "quadruple plate" indicate plate, not sterling.

Is it better to sell sterling silver as scrap or as pieces?

Popular flatware patterns, hollowware by known makers, and designer jewellery often sell for more than melt to replacement-pattern dealers or collectors. Damaged, monogrammed or generic pieces are usually worth melt. Check completed sales of your pattern before scrapping it.
